Plateaus suck

I've sort of hit a plateau weight-wise. I know this is normal and looking at the scale daily is stupid because of that but it's hard not to. I'm going to try to limit scale time to once, maaaaaybe twice a week. It's such a motivator that it's hard to resist. But resist I must. Taking advantage of the fall but still summer-like weather to ride my bike back and forth from the gym. Yes, it's a little early to get up at 6 but riding on the tow path while the sun is coming up is nice treat. Plus, it's a two-fer, I get almost an hour of ride time total and with a quick workout, it's a full exercise day. Getting closer to our golf trip and Anita is going to a yoga retreat at the end of the month. Get her away from responsibility for a few days. She never really gets that opportunity. More to come.

Been a few days...

I suppose it's been more than just a few days. But they've been good ones. I'm at day 18 of my little cleanse/diet/reboot. I'm still not sure what to call it but am down 15.5 lbs. I'm about on track with what I saw when doing a natural food cleanse last winter. That was a 21 day thing and I lost 15.8 during that period. I lost a few more after that and stabilized around 223-225. Sadly, I was only able to stay there until mid June. Then it all came back plus 5 as an added fuck you too. The good news is I think I'm in a better space mentally this time. I am going to continue my current approach for another month when I head out west to play golf and be an idiot for a week. Once back, I will continue where I left off. At that point I'll focus on getting to a good body fat percentage rather than numbers on a scale. Most of the things I've read say that for my age (juuuuuust a few years younger than dirt) my optimal fat range is 17-23 percent. So, I'll ...

Nice day for a ride

My wife and I rode out to Pittsford NY along the canal today for lunch. A little over an hour each way and ate at a place called, Alladin's (I think). Healthy food place and had a spinach salad and a lentil chili. Was surprised by how yummy it was. I remember the last time we did a cleanse that my taste buds really started popping after a week or so and it seems to be happening again. Also went to Rochester's Public Market which is a huge farmers market complex. We walked out with four large bags filled with veggies and fruits. Spent all of 40 bucks together. spent that on 1/3 of the produce at Wegman's last week and their prices are fantastic compared to what we were used to in other parts of the country. Farmers markets are huge when doing these juice diets since I end up juicing an armful of stuff at a time. Feeling really good today. Really good. Slept all night and pretty much bounced out of bed. So far, I'm down about 9 pounds, 1 percent body fat and 1 belt ho...

Feeling pretty good

No change in the scale this morning. But, I can see a difference. I see it in my face, my gut and my energy level. My wife is 'thrilled'. Yes, that was sarcasm. Of course she's happy for me but I'm a guy. That means I can lose 3 times as much as a woman can in the same amount of time. It's unfair. I know. But it's not my fault. Really. Again, she's happy for me and wanted me to get this rolling anyway. At least the mental health aspect. The physical health was a logical continuation once the 'dark side of melon' was addressed. The biggest surprise I've had so far is that the juicing thing is a lot easier than I expected. I've found a couple of things that help already. 1. By the time you feel hungry or weak, you're behind the 8 ball. Eat. Do it now. Eat healthy, of course, but eat. Get some a juice or carrots or salad or something quickly. When you are hungry you make choices that are less thought out. Like TACO BELL! 2. By comb...

Down 9 pounds

I met with my therapist this morning. I rode my bike along the canal for our session. It's always a better day after a nice ride along the water. It's good for the soul and puts me in the right frame of mind for an hour long discussion of my ... issues? Situation? Problems? I don't know. My jacked up psyche I suppose. We got into some good stuff from childhood and parenthood and how it all plays together. Man, she's good. Rode home and talked to Anita about it. Then I made my first juice of the day. A beet, apple, nectarine, swiss chard, carrot and red grape juice. And made a shitload so I have two full glasses. A couple of things. First, two words that should never  be put together are Beet and Shake. Yikes. We had a couple of them when we were doing our cleanse last year and they were simply horrific. The taste was bad enough but the fibrous chewy texture was enough to make you yack. Oh man. Beet juicing, luckily, gets rid of that second problem. The taste is ...

Juicer has arrived. Messes have occurred.

Sept 6th. I got my juicer delivered yesterday. It's huge and loud and makes a fucking mess. It's fantastic!  I worked shoulders at the gym today and then kicked off my little reboot with a Swiss Chard, Rhubarb, Carrot, Strawberry, Red Grape and Ginger juice. It's good. It's really good. I know the recommendation is 80/20 veggies to fruits but I wanted to make sure that the first couple I tried didn't taste like ass and completely hijack my motivation. Nobody wants to drink ass juice. Nobody. Down about 7 lbs with cleaner eating and exercising more regularly. I'm interested to see how the juicing diet will compare. I'm sure it's going to be dramatic. My plan is to gradually move to more juicing during the day and eat a real meal at night. This seems to work best for me since juicing doesn't give much fiber and the shakes and a real meal will help to hold off the hangry attacks. Hungry doesn't motivate, it only irritates. The key is to prevent it...

Background

I have a history. I've been dealing with the same pattern for as long as I can remember. The pattern seems to be that I get deeply involved with something and go at it head first for quite a while and then, seemingly overnight, I lose interest in it completely. This On Cycle usually takes about 6 to 8 months and then, the Off Cycle can last weeks, months or even longer. Eventually something will trigger me to get back in the saddle with the same activity or a new one and then the pattern repeats. The main problem is that my primary 'activity' is getting into and trying to stay in shape. I've had a long history of getting into shape and then falling out of it. Over and over I've been able to get to where I want to be or, at least close to it, and then when I get into what should be the maintenance stage, I lose interest almost immediately. I need to break this cycle. Currently I've begun an Up Cycle. I'm getting in shape and eating better. I've actu...
